Where Sleeping Dogs Lie by Luc Vors

Interview with Psychological Horror Author, Luc Vors

Gothic Bite Magazine always welcomes amazing authors on their website! This week, we have the pleasure to interview, Luc Vors!

Who is Luc Vors?

I am a native Texan with education in psychology, biology, art and music. In college, I did a lot of research on the psychology of creativity, consciousness and free will, so my first publications were actually nonfiction.

Creativity is my passion. I’m constantly working on multiple projects, whether music, game invention, drawing, sculpting, photography or graphic design.

I’m also a little more obsessed with my Jeep than I probably should be. His name’s El Toro, and he eats mountainsides for breakfast.

The Interview

ALEXA WAYNE (A.W.): When did you find out you would want to write novels?

LUC VORS: The seventh grade. My first story was about a girl who lost her legs in a car accident, and a mad doctor sewed the lower half of a dolphin onto her, turning her into a mermaid, Frankenstyle.

A.W.: You mentioned me your work, set in a dark and mental illness environment, would you let our readers know why you are more attracted to that genre?

LUC VORS: I am so fascinated with how things function at their extremes, especially when it comes to the human mind. Our survival instincts are always watching everything that happens around us and inside us.

Pushed too far, those instincts do some pretty incredible things. Where Sleeping Dogs Lie is about that. The original title was Where Sleeping Dogs Lie: On Addiction, because the killer’s taste for blood grew out of being forced to fight for her life in an underground pit-fighting ring.

A.W.: When writing about serial killers and their mental state, do you do research and if so, how far do you go with your research?

LUC VORS: I’m a psychology junkie, so there’s a lot of research. How far do I go with it? Rabbit hole far. From brain anatomy to mythological archetypes and everything in between.

A.W.: What is most important to you when writing your novels?

LUC VORS: They have to be page turners. I can’t think of anything worse that could happen to a book than for someone to put it down.

I want my readers glued to the stories. I want them staying up all night until they reach the end, stare at the cover when they’re done, and have book hangovers.

A.W.: Which authors influenced your writing?

LUC VORS: In fiction, my favorites are Dennis Lehane, Josh Malerman, Dean Koontz, Jodi Picoult and Stephen King.

For nonfiction, I have scientists Fred Alan Wolf, Brian Greene, Seth Lloyd and Ray Kerzweil, philosophers like Ken Wilber and Amit Goswami, the mythologist Joseph Campbell, and mathematicians like Joseph Hofstadter, Ian Stewart and Roger Penrose.

A.W.: Which of your novels is your favorite and why is it your favorite?

LUC VORS: Currently my favorite is Where Sleeping Dogs Lie, but I’m sure when Tether comes out, it’ll take the lead.

A.W.: Do you believe in the hypothesis that people born with psychotic minds might be the evolution of the human brain, i.e., Humankind 2.0?

LUC VORS: YES! The other half of Genius is Madness.

A.W.: What made you decide to be self-published?

LUC VORS: I was flattered that a publisher would want to take me on, but decided to self-publish my first novel. It just felt right.

A.W.: Which villain from any platform, fictional or historical, is either an inspiration to your work and the best of all time?

LUC VORS: Wolfman. Hands down. Because he doesn’t want to be a villain.

A.W.: What sets you apart from other Thriller and Horror authors?

LUC VORS: Really cool psychology, tons of Easter eggs, impossible plotlines, and there is always an undercurrent of social commentary.
