Greetings Gothic Bite ghoul-readers! I’m James the Skeleton in the Closet with my first ever article for the blog! To introduce myself, let me tell you about my Gravedigger Cake.
I initially found a pin on Pinterest a few years back for skeleton treats made up of marshmallows, pretzels and brownie bites.

After showing these cute and straightforward snacks to Alexa, I thought they might be too simple and easy.
Enter the Gravedigger!

*** As we up the stakes, no vampires should be harmed in the baking of the Gravedigger!
How To Up The Stakes
The original recipe, quite easy to figure out, I decided to add a degree of creativity. I swapped out the brownie bites for chocolate cake and shredded coconut I colored green with food dye.

I picked up some Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix and Duncan Hines Creamy Home-Style Frosting.

I used white chocolate covered pretzels, pretzel sticks, marshmallows, sweetened shredded coconut, food coloring, and one edible food dye marker.
Decomposing The Cake
To start, I prepped the coconut the night before by putting two cups of the shredded sweetened fruit in a Ziploc bag and added about 1 Tbsp. of green food coloring kneading the bag in my hands until all the coconut flakes turned a shade of green I was satisfied with for the recipe.

For the cake, just follow the instructions on the box and bake it as it says. Once done, I cut it horizontally in half to add frosting and make it more delicious. Next I frosted the outside of the cake.
Here’s the part where I admit I’m no baker because I had a rough time frosting the cake evenly to make it “blog drooling.”

I’m telling you Biters, at this point my cake was uglier than Quasimodo’s recipes! Luckily packing the shredded coconut hid all the decomposing but then again, it’s Halloween not Hello-Beauty, so don’t be shy!
Edible Bones
As for our skeletons, place the pretzel sticks in the cake to hold your chocolate covered ones in place, four rounded pretzels per stack topped with a marshmallow for a skull. Next, draw the skeleton faces and add whatever else you think would make it scarier!
