It all started when I was four years old—or so I can remember. I would have quite detailed nightmares and real to the touch it had me not wanting to sleep. Later, my grandparents raised me.

My mother even revealed to me that I would not want to sleep in daycare. I was afraid I would not wake up.

The deep dark had come, that time between two and four a.m., when most of the world can be found clutched in the bowels of sleep. A heavy mist slithered in from the sea. Saint Theresa of the Blessed Heart Hospital was hushed. Roan settled further into his chair as he read, fleeing from the creeping chill. Beside him, Selena rested. Her breathing was slow, even, comforting in its regularity. He glanced at her every so often when the clacking of shoes on tile stirred him from his book. In the cavernous silence, the pages whispered with each turning. The story, lifted from his favorite video game series, captivated him.

When the Friday Creep Night was on at my house growing up, The Mangler was on the list of movies to watch.

Written by Stephen King, I had to give it a try. I didn’t know what it would come out as at the time since I never read the short story from the King of Horror. When I put the movie on, I didn’t know what to expect. The Mangler is a short story and a nineties’ movie.
