Folklore of Secrecy

This month dedicates itself to one Native American folklore often used but not well understood outside of the cultural belief. Someone capable of shifting to animal shapes and can haunt you to your last breath. It is with much carefulness that we present a terrifying legendary monster native of North America.

First of All

When I started writing, I promised myself that I would have Native Americans in each of my stories. Some may ask why, and this is my answer: I live in the French province of Quebec in Canada where many older people sharing the bloodline of Native Americans suffered shame from other cultures.

Me, I am proud and taught my grandpa, who raised me, to be proud of his blood and magnificent rich ancestry. My grandfather was Native American, part of the Mohawk people to be more précised. On my grandmother’s side, while she was Acadian, she did also share some Native American blood we believed to be Ojibwe.

Sandman, A Horror Poem

For the month of April, Gothic Bite Magazine is celebrating the character of Sandman. A mystical character that worked its way into the paranormal world. Here is a poem about the sand throwing man.

Sandman

He is coming through the dilapidated alley
Slowly he’s coming to your window and watches the prey.
And if you look at his gaze you will fall in never land
For he will feed your eyes with his fearsome dreadful sand.
Shhhh here comes the Sandman.

Bring Me A Dream

The Sandman is, while not the most recognizable character, one of my favorites of the fantastical. I don’t see him myself as a monster in the strictest of sense, but I do include him in the land of lore. Since he is our main feature for April, I will try to do my best to pay him homage.

Misunderstood

I remember hearing about the Sandman as a child; it wasn’t through the Hans Christian Andersen’s story but through The Chordettes version of Mr. Sandman the song. In fact, in almost every rendition that I have had the pleasure to read or hear since I was introduced to the Sandman, every instance has been innocent, good intent, misunderstood, and complex.

There are a few versions in the last few years that especially stand out. It is always fascinating to see how different minds see the same lore and make it come to life in their worlds.

When we think of monsters, Blob isn’t the one at the top of the list. However, it is an important one in cinema history and who doesn’t like Blobby!

Next Superman?
