Soon after their arrival, bizarre, increasingly-violent accidents claim the lives of various campers. Who is the twisted individual behind these murders?

The disclosure of the murderer’s identity is one of the most shocking climaxes in the history of American cinema. — Written by Drew, IMDb

The 80s Glory

On November 18th, 1983 the movie, Sleepaway Camp hit the theatres. Sleepaway Camp is a franchise in the B Horror genre that made three times its original budget for the movie. It became a cult in the horror genre.

I do enjoy slasher movies and moreover when they are from the 80s. The movie owns the fact that it is a B movie and I respect it and love it.

The Sleepaway Camp storyline revolves around the character of Angela who survived a horrifying accident concerning her immediate family at a lake.

The 80s glory in horror is all about a good slasher, a tragic story, lots of teenagers, a bully, a hero, and a twist, you kind of but not saw coming your way.

It has it all and the amazing fashion for men and women!

The Angela Sleepaway Case

Angela is a quiet, introverted and overly shy young teenage girl. She survived the accident that took away her family and lives with her cousin, Ricky, who protects her.

However, once at the camp, which can hold over hundred people, the girls are together and so she is momentarily taken away from her cousin, Ricky.

I never saw that happening in real life! But for no apparent reason, the pretty and popular girl of the camp decides to be Angela’s bully. The girl is silent and minds her business and yet, this Judy wants to make her life a nightmare.

Every chance she gets, Judy tries to humiliate Angela or pile on her case mentioning she doesn’t have breasts at all. Her cousin, Ricky’s friend, finds Angela attractive and show his interest.

Judy might not like it, but his attraction to Angela wins over Judy. But, the girl is shy and doesn’t want to go as far as he wants to for a reason.

Why Is It A Summer Camp Classic?

The murders happening keeps you wondering who the serial killer could be. The story gives us many choices throughout the movie and keeps us guessing as the body count keeps growing. Each event has you get deeper into Angela’s story.

Her cousin, quite protective of her, considering her his sister, has you wonder how far he would go to protect her.

It all starts when the cook chief meets Angela and wants to molest her but she escapes. He is the first to die at the hands of who becomes a serial slasher killer!

Each murder is different and executed with a quite innovative thinking. Like any other 80s slasher, the gruesome compared to today’s work, is just delightful. I believe the idea behind the killings to be what made this movie a classic.

I Cannot, Not Mention Aunt Martha!

The acting is worthy of a B movie, but some overacting is awesome when you watch that type of movie. However, the one who wins the award for bringing overacting to another level, is Angela’s aunt and mother of Ricky, Martha.

From the red string around her index finger to her overly acted movements of “I think I forgot something!” Martha is quite a character! The reveal of the end proves what one can deduced by her strange behavior at the beginning.

I do not know if the director wanted this type of acting or not but it’s quite funny.

So, Why Not Watch It?

Sleepaway a camp to give you nightmares is one to watch! After all, it is available on Shudder and it is the month of Halloween!

Why not treat yourself! Seriously, all I can say is give it a watch and let us know if you saw the twist at the end coming!
