Palais Garnier - Opéra de Paris - France

The Phantom of the Opera Fanlore

While doing some research on The Phantom of the Opera, I have stumbled upon followers of the monster created by Gaston Leroux and made quite famous over the years through various musicals.

Summary

Deformed since birth, a bitter man known only as the Phantom lives in the sewers underneath the Paris Opera House.

The Phantom falls in love with the obscure chorus singer Christine, and privately tutors her while terrorizing the rest of the opera house and demanding Christine be given lead roles.

A Gothic Romance

When it comes to a specific genre, it becomes harder to find something to our liking. While some consider The Phantom of the Opera to be Gothic horror literature, some believe it Gothic romance. The line is fine between the two; however, one thing remains for sure, it is Gothic literature.

Unique and inspiring, Gaston Leroux created a novel that would start a fan base that is unique in its genre and with enthusiasts that would waste no time to be inspired by his writing and story and create their own.

Like mentioned in my other articles about the novel, many authors were inspired by the character of the Phantom and created their version of the universe he was a part of back in the Victorian days. Aside from published authors, many decided to create a fan fiction sanctuary for all the fans of Gaston Leroux’s work and the musical from the year, 2004.

A Fan Fiction World

On websites such as DeviantArt, it is quite easy to find many groups with the Phantom as the main star. Literature from fans of all ages from all around the world is seen as well as the artwork is known as fan art, the manga style being the one of choice when it comes to The Phantom of the Opera.

Like me, many believe Christine should’ve chosen the Phantom over Raoul, the main focus of many fanfiction stories focuses around the two being together in an alternate universe being noncanonical to the story of Gaston Leroux.

The fan fiction world goes as far as creating other kinds of relationship between the Phantom and Raoul, a menage between all three main characters and the Phantom along with other males. There is a story to satisfy everyone enjoying the Gothic romance Gaston Leroux created.

Reenactment of Love

The world of The Phantom of the Opera doesn’t stop at literature or musicals, but reenactment as well. There are a variety of YouTube Channels displaying their love for the world of Leroux or the musical.

While some changes the story, others do the after the ending. There is an entire world of a variety of fans out there for the Phantom and his story, and it’s alive and well. While I am aware of it all, my love for the original story remains, however, I must admit I do change the ending in my head and decided that Christine would choose the Phantom over Raoul.

What is your perfect ending?
