Hotel Transylvania 3 — Summer Vacation by Sony Pictures Animation

Hotel Transylvania 3 Review by Alexa Wayne

Hotel Transylvania is one of my most beloved franchises for its style and uniqueness.

I liked that the creative team decided to come up with a movie about monsters instead of humans or superheroes.

In a world where everything seems to be the same, Hotel Transylvania dares to be different, well, going from a hotel to a cruise, primarily a hotel, on water.

Let’s do the Hotel Transylvania Summer Vacations Review!

Everybody needs a vacation, even Dracula!

After Mavis (Selena Gomez) found her zing with Johnny (Andy Samberg), married him and had a little vampire hybrid named Dennis (Asher Blinkoff) and met her grandfather, Vlad (Mel Brooks), it is time for her father to go on vacation!

We all know that Dracula (Adam Sandler) was not only a widow but also the founder of the hotel for monsters and a single parent. Dracula sometimes feels alone and even joined an online dating site for monsters!

However, it’s while on the cruise that Dracula finally feels a second “zing” that he didn’t think was possible. He falls for Captain Eunice (Fran Drescher) of the cruise ship who happens to be part of the Van Helsing family.

MOVING AROUND

What is impressive with this third movie, is that we are moving away from the hotel and go somewhere entirely different while reminiscent of a hotel.

The thought behind every single detail is incredibly done. Either it’s about Air Gremlin or play Monster Ball, to name a few without ruining the movie’s little puns!

What made Hotel Transylvania so unique, was the easiness the creative team had to make a movie so amazing by staying uniquely in one location or almost.

However, with the third movie, they moved the central team around entirely and brought them on a ship navigating near the Bermuda Triangle.

THE PLOT

NO SPOILERS! Don’t worry. The only thing I have to say is that it was very well thought out. Despite the result being easily predictable, it is still a delight to watch before our eyes.

It is very refreshing also to see Dracula, a single father and a woman captain with blonde-white hair being the center of attention.

The plot itself though noticeable is very amusing and filled with adventures and cuteness. Just like the previous movies, this one is undoubtedly just as entertaining to watch.

THE ART

There’s no surprise there, the art is equally of high quality as the others, and the details on the ship is incredibly done. The acrobatic skills of Captain Eunice are worth of the Cirque du Soleil and impressive to look at happening before your eyes. That woman is very flexible! I’m envious of her skills!

I admire the mind of each illustrator an animator for the franchise. I studied both illustration and 3D Animation, and it is a very meticulous job to achieve that kind of precision in animated films. Amazing! I prefer Sony‘s creative team to Disney ever since they came out with Hotel Transylvania.

They dare something different, and it is terrific for both children and adults. However, I almost find this movie to be more for adults… watch it, and you’ll see what I mean.

OVERALL

A remarkable story, phenomenal animation, funny script, it has it all as usual! I’m not a fan of Adam Sandler, at all, Dracula is the only time I can stand him and find him funny.

I haven’t seen a movie in the theatres for eight years, and this was my first one going back, I do not regret it! The movie was so good that it went by so fast! The experience was, and as I said, although supposedly for children, we were three women adults going, and it was fangtastic! 😉

I recommend the movie to everyone; you won’t regret it, it is entirely worth it!
Moreover, I KNOW there a fourth movie is coming for sure!

Rating: 9/10

ROLLBACK TO THE BEGINNING

Hotel Transylvania

The first movie of Hotel Transylvania revolved around the one and only Dracula, who build a hotel for monsters to feel safe and have a getaway worthy of a cute spook! However, it is also about Mavis’s birthday where she eventually meets Johnny, a human, and falls in love with him — in the movie known as a “zing.”

Hotel Transylvania 2

The sequel, just as amazingly refreshing as the first one, is about the continuity of Mavis and Johnny’s relationship moving on to a wedding and leading to the birth of their son, Dennis.

We then see the interactions of monsters with humans, the family of Mavis and Johnny and the introduction of Dracula’s father, Vlad. The mystery, of course, revolves around Dennis being a vampire or not.

Hotel Transylvania The Series

Following the incredible two movies of Hotel Transylvania, both being a success, the cartoon series made its way on the small screen!

The cartoon, inspired by the movies doesn’t follow the exact setting of the franchise. The originality and “cute monstrosity” remains the same, but specific details are unique to the cartoon that makes it just as addictive.

Mavis (Bryan McAuley) is 114 and surrounded by friends unseen in the movies such as Wendy Blob (Evany Rosen), Hank N. Stein (Gage Munroe) and Pedro (Joseph Motiki.) It all takes place while Dracula (David Berni) is away and leaves the hotel in the hands of his older sister, Lydia (Dan Chameroy) when called to be part of the Vampire Council.

The series has only one season, but new episodes aired on June 25th. We are all waiting for the fate of the series from Disney Channel with fingers crossed.

    1. I’m so happy you liked. Yes, this is such a refreshing cartoon. Not much of those growing up, but I was lucky enough to grow up in the 90’s, so not too bad in terms of cartoons. Today, it’s definitely a good one to watch!
