I was just sitting here on my couch, my dog by myself, the fan and the heater are on at the same time. I looked outside and saw the darkness of the night. It’s 10:55pm. Then, it just hit me, “Vampires what if they were real?”

The Monsters

When I was young and I watched Buffy or even if I go earlier and mention Interview with the Vampire or what about Lost Boys and From Dusk Till Dawn? Then, let’s go forward in time and mention 30 Days of Nights. Those are the vampires humans believed in for the longest time. The monsters, the condemned, the ones cursed to immortality and drink the blood of innocents.

I have watched those movies and series and researched their nature. I have, for a very long time, believed they were the most dangerous creatures that if true, would be the end of mankind. Their abilities alone are enough to bring any human to its knees unless the sun would rise at the right moment or if protected by the invitation curse on the vampires.

The Romance? Not so much

Then came along a new era of vampires, the one that revived the paranormal romance section of your bookstore. With series such as The Night Huntress or The Night Prince by Jeaniene Frost (one of my favorite authors), Love at Stake series by Kerrelyn Sparks, Gena Showalter with the Royal House of Shadow series, The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J. R. Ward. The most famous of that kind being Charlaine Harris with A Sookie Stackhouse Novel, which then was turned into the famous HBO series of True Blood. Among many others, obviously.

My point being the genre was revived and many authors flourished from the success of other authors. However, despite that genre being called “romance” some of them are more than sensual or erotic scenes. I have read Once Burned and believe me, there is way more to the story than what the cover leads it to be.

Also, if you ever sit down and watch True Blood, you will notice that the romance is not without its price. A vampire is not all sex and “goth.” They have their own world hidden in the dark. They live according to ancient rules and either are trying to “come out of the coffin” as Charlaine Harris cleverly put or stay hidden. Either way, it is a frightening thought when reading those novels. Qualified as romance or not.

Back on the couch

I might have my own novels all planned out. I have done long hours of research and came out with a world of vampires of my own. I have combined what I like about the monsters and the tamed. To this day, I still look outside and wonder what it would be like if vampires were real.

What if, one night I would step out of my house at dusk or at night and see a vampire walking by? What then? I would surely reconsider all that I have learned and certainly wonder about many tricks mankind have come to share to protect oneself against such a being.

Maybe it is my obsession with the creature that always leads me to believe that there might be somewhere somehow, a creature that might be resemblant to what we have come to know as a vampire. There is this part of me, deep within, that will never stop writing about possibilities of their existence through stories that I will turn into novels.

We have come to know the monsters, the more romanesque and now what about if they were real?
